~PERSONAL SAFETY~
- ELEVATORS -
• Observe the elevator interior before
entering.
• Wait until the next elevator if you are
uncertain of any occupant.
• Women riding the elevator alone should
try to stand near the control panel. If accosted, press all the buttons.
• Before exiting from the elevator, observe
the corridor for suspicious activity.

If someone tries to rob you, do
not resist. Give up your property, and
report the crime to the police as soon as it is safe to do so.
- ON THE STREET -
• Be Aware
• Stay alert and tuned in to your
surroundings. This not only helps you avoid being victimized, but lets the
criminal know you could identify him or her-and take defensive action.
• Be Assertive
• Don't look or walk like a victim. "Own"
the street and know where you are going.
• Plan for Safety
• Plan your itinerary with safety in mind:
• Women should carry personal items in a
purse tucked under the arm.
• Men can carry a "dummy" wallet with one
or two dollars and expired credit cards.
• Avoid going out alone, especially at
night.
• When possible, walk on well-lit,
well-traveled streets, facing traffic and avoid shortcuts.
• Do not flash around large amounts of cash
or jewelry.
• Keep keys handy so you don't linger
unaware at your car or the door of your residence.
• Keep a polite distance from strangers.
• If someone stops to ask for directions,
answer from a distance. Do not attempt to approach the vehicle. If you feel
threatened, immediately go to a populated area.
• Trust Your Instincts
o If something or someone makes you feel
uneasy, avoid the person or leave.
o If you feel threatened, take immediate
action, such as running or yelling.
Remember!
If someone tries to rob you, do
not resist. Give up your property, and
report the crime to the police as soon as it is safe to do so.
